ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar on Saturday said that a consensus has been reached to construct two new dams immediately.
The CJP made these remarks during a hearing of the suo motu case pertaining to waiving of Rs54 billion loans by 222 defaulters during the government of former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.
The Supreme Court had ordered those 222 defaulters to submit 75 percent amount in the loan write-off ase.
“The amount recovered from the defaulters would be used to construct dams,” said the top judge.
“Some companies have showed their willingness to return 75 percent of the written-off loan amount”, said the CJP adding that the cases of those companies who don’t want to return the amount would be sent to the banking courts.
Earlier this month, the top court took a suo motu notice of a report by the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) regarding water scarcity.
According to the report, Pakistan may suffer absolute scarcity of water by 2025.
Amid drastic situation of water, there is a demand of Kalabagh dam going viral on social media. However, some major politicians including Shehbaz Sharif, Pervez Khattak, Asfandyar Wali and Khursheed Shah came out against the demand of constructing the Kalabagh dam.
Now, the good news regarding the construction of two new damns is being largely welcomed by the social media and civil society.
Farooq H Naik, a renowned lawyer, praised the CJP Nisar during the hearing saying “You will be remembered in the history for all the right reasons”.
